NYK Delphinus cargo being discharged in Oakland
Date:2021-08-18 Readers:
JAPANESE liner shipping company Ocean Network Express (ONE) says cargo discharge operations have begun for the fire-damaged 4,882 TEU NYK Delphinus in Oakland, California, according to UK's The Loadstar.

ONE, a composite carrier of three Japanese operators, MOL, K Line and NYK, announced that US import cargo with General Average security (GAS) was released on Monday. The cargo will be stored in a temporary holding area at the port and when GAS is posted it will be moved to a delivery area, said the line.

"Please follow the usual processes for confirming release status, securing an appointment and checking container availability with the terminal before proceeding pickup arrangement of these units," said ONE.

Meanwhile, the shipping company said transshipment cargo with GAS posted will be loaded onto the "earliest available service" as a priority. Cargo awaiting GAS will board the earliest connecting services following payment.

Discharged containers will only be released after the GAS payment is confirmed by average adjuster Blue Seas Adjusters.

The NYK Delphinus contacted US Coast Guard on the morning of May 14 reporting an engine fire with 24 people on board approximately 50 miles west off the coast of Monterey. There were no injuries to crew members and no reported signs of pollution. The fire was brought under control and the ship was eventually towed to the Port of Oakland.

Among the cargo were a number of refrigerated reefer containers that had lost power in incident. NYK Delphinus is operated on THE Alliance's AL5 service string and was travelling from Fraser River, Canada at the Port of Vancouver to Oakland, California at the time of the fire. The Liberia-flagged ship is about 295 metres in length by 32 meters wide and was built in 2007.

The owners of the vessel declared GAS in May.
