Port of Wilmington tops record for box volume at 324,145 TEU
Date:2021-09-16 Readers:
THE Port of Wilmington has reported significant growth, setting a record at 324,145 TEU for total container volume compared to the previous fiscal year, reports Wilmington Business Journal.

"Container volume has increased two per cent for FY21 over FY20," said Port representative Amy Passaretti

"Refrigerated container volume is up nine per cent in FY21 from FY20 - and has increased 300 per cent since 2015. We handled 2 million tonnes of cargo in FY21."

Together, the Port of Wilmington and the Port of Morehead City in FY21 handled 3.2 million tonnes of general cargo.

Meanwhile, the North Carolina Ports Authority board approved a 30-year lease agreement with Cold Summit Development to develop 460,000 square feet of cold storage space in two buildings on property owned by the port off Raleigh Street in Wilmington.

The project would deepen the harbour from 42 feet to 47 feet, allowing it to accommodate larger deep-draft container vessels.

Said NC Port Website: "A more efficient channel would modernise the port, attract more import and export business, help mitigate East Coast congestion, and help North Carolina Ports become an even stronger player in this competitive landscape, thereby supporting the economies of Wilmington, New Hanover County, eastern North Carolina and the entire state."
