RATES for shipping containers from the Far East to both US coasts are on the rise as US consumers' demand for goods shows no signs of easing, reports Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide.
The trade group National Retail Federation (NRF) declared that volumes at the nation's ports will remain high before returning to normal growth rates later in the year.
"Even with the holiday season behind us, supply chain challenges continue," said NRF vice president Jonathan Gold.
"The huge increases in imports we've seen have leveled out, but volume is still at high levels."
Mr Gold also declared that the emergence of the Omicron variant "is a wild card that could not only impact the supply chain workforce but once again drive more imports if consumers stay home and spend their money on retail goods rather than going out."
Freightos head of research Judah Levine declared that restrictions aimed at containing the Covid crisis near the Port of Ningbo that raised concerns last week have largely been removed.
But Mr Levine said new measures are in place in the ports of Shenzhen and Tianjin following new detections of the virus there.
Mr Levine also pointed out that the congestion at US ports has not significantly improved.
The Marine Exchange of Southern California (MESC) declared there were 101 container ships backed up at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
