Port of Barcelona volume up 19pc to 3.5 million TEU in 2021
Date:2022-02-22 Readers:
THE Port of Barcelona revenues increased nine per cent in 2021 to EUR151 million (US$171 million) while its annual container volume grew 19 per cent to 3.5 million TEU at the same time, reported Port Technology International.

"The upturn in traffic outpaces the jump in revenue because the latter includes the port's economic aid package to promote economic recovery and mitigate the effects of the pandemic," said port president Damia Calvet.

The Recovery Plan, which was launched in 2021 and will remain in force through 2022, resulted in the port saving nearly EUR11 million, which the port authority ceased to collect.

"The Port of Barcelona closes 2021 with a clash flow of EUR83 million, which allows us to continue developing our strategic agenda and create the necessary conditions for economic growth," Mr Calvet said.

The port signed an agreement with the Port of Busan to start a company that will manage and promote the platform among Korean companies.

Back in March 2021, APM Terminals (APMT) Barcelona began to work on a pilot project to use 5G technologies to improve safety in the port.

The goal of the project was to minimise the potential risks of collisions between mobile machinery and fixed elements, vehicles and people in the terminal.

The port also approved a EUR60 million investment for increased capacity at the Hutchison Ports BEST terminal.

Hutchison said it would invest EUR31 million to increase its container block capacity from 27 to 34, increasing capacity 26 per cent or 700,000 TEU. The remaining EUR29 million ($32.8 million) would be invested in machinery, including 14 new automated cranes.
