Port of Santos ups volume 6.5pc to 486,300 TEU in September

BRAZIL's Port of Santos increased container throughput year on year 6.5 per cent in September to 486,300 TEU setting a record as well as besting last 2021's year-to-date results by 20.7 per cent, reports London's Port Technology.
Cargo handled in the month totaled 13.6 million tons, a 14.9 per cent year-on-year surge. This was the highest monthly mark for the month of September.

At the current growth rate, the port authority anticipates surpassing the annual record of last year's total of 147 million tons.

The movement of ships in the year came to 3,899 vessels, 6.9 per cent above the previous year. The accumulated share of the Port of Santos in Brazilian trade was 28.9 per cent (US$32.8 billion).

Around 30.5 per cent of domestic commercial transactions with foreign countries that passed through the port complex had China as a partner country ($40.58 billion).

Sao Paulo was the state with the highest participation (53.8 per cent) in foreign trade transactions through Santos, reaching $71.54 billion.

In September, the Brazilian National Waterway Transport Agency (ANTAQ) approved the public concession process for the Port of Santos.

The project is being structured to provide BRL6.3 billion (US$1.2 billion) will be allocated to port infrastructure and BRL4.2 billion to the construction of a submerged tunnel that will connect the cities of Santos and Guaruja.
