Port of Oakland suffers 7.9pc loss in loaded container volume
Date:2022-11-03 Readers:
IN September, the Port of Oakland saw a 7.9 per cent loss in total loaded container volume, with 132,599-TEU loaded through the port, compared to 143,991 TEU in September 2021, reports London's Port Technology.

Loaded imports dropped 4.9 per cent, with 77,803 TEU handled compared to 81,789 TEU the previous year.

Year-to-date total imports were down five per cent compared to the first nine months of 2021.

Loaded export containers saw a 12 per cent decline, with 54,756 TEU passing through the port in September compared to 62,203 TEU in September 2021.

Ocean carriers operating out of Oakland haven't reinstated many scheduled services, and exporters remain sceptical as schedule reliability is low.

The port authority has attributed the decline to increased import dwell time, port congestion, continued US west coast supply chain, and lack of capacity to meet demand.

Empty containers passing through the seaport saw a 38.3 per cent increase in empty exports and a 23.9 per cent uptick in empty imports.

The US Department of Transportation is using US$703 million to fund 41 projects to improve port facilities.
