THE Canadian Competition Bureau has stopped investigating Panalpina after alleging anti-competitive activity in the international freight forwarding industry, citing a lack of evidence that would substantiate charges of an "undue lessening of competition", reports the UK's International Freighting Weekly.

The investigation was one of several started in late 2007 into apparent cartel behaviour in freight forwarding, which led to raids on Schenker, Kuehne + Nagel, Panalpina, EGL and Expeditors offices in the UK, the US, Switzerland, Canada and South Africa.

A spokesman for Panalpina said the Canadian decision was a positive sign, and fitted with the company's own belief that the allegations were groundless. But it was unclear whether EU and US investigated used the same information as was used by the Canadians.
