PIRATES HIJACK HANDY BULKER
Date:2009-10-29 Readers:
Somali pirates have seized a second bulk carrier in the space of a day, hijacking the 22,000 dwt Panamanian Al Khaliq 180 miles west of the Seychelles. EU NAVFOR patrol aircraft confirmed the hijacking, with 6 pirates seen on board and two skiffs in tow. A third, the 'mother ship' had apparently already been winched onto the ship's deck.
At the same time as the attack on the Al Khaliq, the Italian ro-ro Jolly Rosso was attacked 400 miles east of Mombasa. The ship was raked with small arms fire and had a number of RPGs launched at it, but was able to evade its pursuers and escape without casualties. The ship's owner, Messina Line, is reported to be planning on placing armed guards on its vessels following a string of attempted attacks against its ships.
