LUFTHANSA Cargo and Hermes Transport Logistics are "intensifying their cooperation" with Lufthansa Cargo handling logistics of incoming shipments arriving at Leipzig Airport since August.

Aside from imports, Lufthansa Cargo is responsible for arranging and loading truck transports to the Hermes bases at Haldensleben und Altenkunstadt. In future, the freight will be flown direct to Leipzig/Halle by Boeing 777 freighters in the fleet of Lufthansa Cargo-AeroLogic joint venture or be trucked by road from Frankfurt to the Hermes bases, said a Lufthansa statement.

"Our flexibility and deployment of low-emission Boeing 777 freighters make a convincing case," said Lufthansa Cargo cargo handling vice president Mohammad Ali Seiraffi.

Lufthansa Cargo clocked 8.3 billion revenue tonne kilometres last year. The company employs 4,600, worldwide and serves some 300 destinations in 90 countries with its own fleet of freighters, and has access to bellyhold capacity of the passenger fleet. Lufthansa Cargo is a wholly-owned Lufthansa subsidiary, and posted revenues of EUR2.9 billion (US$4.3 billion) in 2008.
