LAST week in The Container Shipping Manager we began to look at the leading logistics service providers, and their customers and market orientation, in the US as part of our ongoing review of the country’s shipping sector this year.
    Our focus last week was on the top six service providers. Today we will continue to look at the top logistics service providers in the US, by looking at the next six largest companies, before we conclude our series next week spanning the entire shipping sector in the country.
    We can see in the above table that the seventh largest is Genco ATC, which posted an estimated US$3.1 billion last year in gross revenue and close to $1.5 billion in net revenue, based on figures provided by Armstrong & Associates.
    The company is heavily represented in the reverse logistics segment in the US, which contributed 40 per cent of the company’s revenue in 2011. It is also well placed in the IT sector with Dell as one of its leading customers.
    It also includes fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) shipper Unilever, food and beverage (F&B) shipper Hershey and retail giant Sears among its key accounts.
    Genco ATC is supported by 124 warehouses across the US. 
    The eighth largest logistics operator in the US, based on last year’s performance, is DB Schenker, which is owned by Deutsche Bahn.
    The company earned over $4 billion in gross revenue last year, and $1.1 billion in net revenue.
    It is strong in the automotive industry with key customers such as BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen. It is also strong in the FMCG sector with key customers Proctor & Gamble and Unilever.
