Prof. Sergio Prete, President of Italian’s Port of Taranto Authority, shared with SISI (Shanghai International Shipping Institute) his latest research results on the practice of landlord port worldwide in today’s workshop held at SISI.
Prof. Prete began with an introduction of Taranto Port. He stressed the strategic importance of the port as a hub port in Europe and illustrated his point with a comparative study by a renowned consulting company in the continent of the sea routes via the port of Antwerp, Hamburg and Taranto respectively. The study shows that ship route calling at the Port of Taranto instead of Hamburg or Antwerp Port saves not only time but also money in cargo shipment from Shanghai to Munich. Prof. Prete then went on to present Taranto Port’s development plan by the Year 2015. He also mapped out during the workshop his research outline on the topic of international practice of landlord port. He said in-depth discussions with his SISI’s counterparts would be significant in understanding the current situation in China in terms of landlord port practice. A Q&A session followed where SISI’s researchers put forward questions they are interested in concerning Port of Taranto and the landlord model in Europe as a whole.
Prof. Prete has been appointed by the Italian government as Commissioner Straordinaire February this year, to fulfill the strategic construction in the port area and promote the overall development of the port. He has begun his research visit to SISI Monday this week. He shall be a visiting scholar upon SISI’s invitation for a fortnight starting from December 9th 2012.
