The world's largest containership has been built by South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI). Named the CSCL Globe, it is the first of five 19,000 TEU ships on order for China Shipping Container Lines.

The vessel is 400 metres stem to stern, 58.6 metres abeam and 30.5 metres from keel to monkey's island. The newbuilding will be deployed on the Asia-Europe trade lane after it is delivered to the owner later this month.

It features a 77,200 bhp (brake horse power) electronically-controlled main engine which HHI says will enhance fuel efficiency by automatically controlling fuel consumption according to the ship's speed and sea conditions, reports the UK's Motorship.

With the installation of the high efficiency engine, the containership is expected to burn 20 per less fuel per TEU compared to 10,000 TEU containerships.
