Shanghai surpasses Beijing as China's biggest air hub in cargo, passengers
Date:2015-08-21 Readers:

Shanghai's two airports have overtaken Beijing's PEK as China's busiest aviation hub in cargo and passengers, East China Air Traffic Management Bureau.

Shanghai's two airports, Pudong (PVG) and Hongqiao (SHA), handled 3.61 million tonnes of cargo and mail in 2014 against Beijing's Capital airports' 3.51 million tonnes, reports Atlanta area Air Cargo World.

Shanghai also handled more regional and international passengers than Beijing. In 2014, PVG handled up to 26 million regional and international passengers, accounting for about 50 per cent of the total passengers.

In the first five months, Shanghai's two airports have dealt with 48.15 million passengers - 28.99 million at PVG and 19.16 million at SHA, according to the latest statistics.

This surpasses the 44.07 million that passed through PEK. It is predicted that the air traffic demand will continue to grow at Shanghai due to the launch of Shanghai Disneyland next week.

Beijing Capital rapidly ascended in rankings of the world's busiest airports in the past decade, notes Wikipedia. It had become the busiest airport in Asia in terms of passenger traffic and total traffic movements by 2009.

It was the world's second busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic from 2010-2013 and as of March 1, 2014, it was the second-busiest airport in the world in 2014.
