THE Alliance falls behind rival alliances in mega box ship fleet stakes
Date:2019-09-26 Readers:
THE Alliance will have 60 per cent less 18,000+ TEU containerships compared to rivals 2M and the Ocean Alliance, even after Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) joins THE Alliance next April.

Evergreen, which along with Cosco, OOCL, APL and CMA CGM make up the Ocean Alliance, has just ordered ten 23,000 TEU ships to be built at South Korean and Chinese yards. This order takes the Ocean Alliance's 18,000+ TEU fleet close to parity to Maersk and Mediterranean Shipping Company's 2M alliance, with 61 and 62 such ships, respectively, Alphaliner data shows, reported Singapore's Splash247.

By contrast, THE Alliance, including HMM, Hapag-Lloyd, Yang Ming and Ocean Network Express (ONE), will only have 24 megamaxes by next April.

Taiwan's Evergreen now has the largest boxship orderbook globally, with 600,000 slots.
