ASA welcomes India's accession to HKC green ship scrapping
Date:2019-12-06 Readers:
THE Asian Shipowners' Association (ASA) welcomes the recent accession of India, and recognises its final step toward enactment of the Hong Kong International Convention (HKC) for the Safe and Environmentally-Sound Recycling of Ships, is approaching.

India, as one of the top volume ship recycling countries in the world, became the 15th contracting state to the HKC and adopted in 2009.

After the recent accession by Ghana, the Singapore-based ASA regards this as turning point by fulfilment of required number of contracting countries for enactment of the convention.

"ASA fully appreciates the energetic upgrading of ship recycling yards and operations in India taken by joint efforts among ship recyclers, shipowners, governments and labour unions concerned, as well as class associations which are the driving force for accession and by which we are strongly hoping to transplant this kind of joint work success to other ship recycling countries," said the group's press release.
