Memphis-based FedEx Express opened its EUR140 million (US$194.7 million) central and eastern Europe hub at Cologne Bonn Airport after moving from Frankfurt am Main.
The centre, focussed on the growing Asia-Europe trade, has a fully-automated sorting system that can process 18,000 packages and documents an hour and the roof that is FedEx's largest solar power plant.
"The new Cologne hub is a testament to FedEx optimism in the economic potential of Germany and the central and Eastern Europe region. In the first seven months in 2010, Germany had EUR87.7 billion trade surplus among the [EU] member states," said David Cunningham, president of FedEx Express Asia Pacific of a site, which has grown from 35 to 450 employees in a number of months.
