QATARI ports of Hamad,
Doha and Ruwais Port saw a significant rise in cargo volumes in
January, handling 50 per cent more vehicles compared to the same month
in 2019.
General cargo traffic rose by 22 per
cent, while container traffic grew by five per cent in January, said
Mwani Qatar, reported The Peninsula, Qatar.
These ports handled 8,638 vehicles, 115,837 TEU and 57,016 tonnes of general cargo in January 2020.
In total 290 vessels docked at Qatari ports in January.
Ports positive performance in January comes after Qatar's maritime
sector set new volume and productivity benchmarks in 2019. Hamad port,
Ruwais port and Doha port received 4,082 vessels and handled 1.34
million TEU containers during the year.
Qatar's maritime sector is expected to witness another year of strong
growth as a number of steps have been taken by the authorities to boost
cargo throughput at the ports, including the expansion of Hamad port.
The development works of phase II at Hamad port, which comprises a
second container terminal (CT-2), has already got underway. As part of
the development of CT-2, QTerminals has placed an order for 24 terminal
trailers.
The goal is to transform Qatar into a vibrant trading hub in the region
and attract more transshipment containers and encourage more
international shipping lines to add Hamad port to their regional routes.
Mwani Qatar had also signed a container services agreement in November
last year with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) to use Hamad port as
a regional hub to manage transhipments for up to 150,000 TEU per annum,
expanding to one million TEU by 2023.
While Hamad port has become Qatar's gateway to world trade, Ruwais port
is also playing a crucial role in stimulating country's economy. Ruwais
has become one of the most important ports to meet the increasing needs
of the domestic market for foodstuff, especially meat and fresh and
chilled products. The port is also being expanded.
