World's biggest LNG-powered ship docks at Shanghai port
Date:2020-09-29 Readers:
THE world's largest liquefied natural gas-powered containership was put into operation at Shanghai's Yangshan Port, loading 1,900 containers before sailing to South Korea, reports SHINE Shanghai Daily.

The 23,000-TEU CMA CGM Jacques Saade, one of nine same-sized LNG-powered vessels built by Shanghai's Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Co and Jiangnan Shipyard Co. It was recently delivered to French shipping giant CMA CGM.

The 399.9-metre long, 61.3-metre wide ship has a 24,000-square metre deck, as big as 3.5 football fields. It can take 220,000 tons of goods.

The ship has the capacity of 18,600 cubic metres of LNG, enough for two months at sea. LNG eliminates a large amount of carbon, sulphur and particulate matter pollution. The vessel can also be powered by oil.

Twenty-six crew are needed to run the ship. Containerships of the same scale need over 30 men, a port official said.

Meanwhile, it was reported that 27 foreign sailors - French, Poles and Ukrainians - had arrived in Shanghai since March. All had been quarantined for medical observation and all had been cleared.
