THE 3,650-TEU CMA CGM Africa Four called at Seattle for the first time as part of a new service to the Northwest Seaport Alliance.
The new service will have a Shanghai-Yantian-Oakland-Seattle-Kaohsiung-Shanghai rotation. The NWSA gateway includes the ports of Seattle and Tacoma.
Marseilles-based French shipping giant CMA CGM established its new Golden Gate Bridge service to increase supply-chain consistency with a weekly service that will provide US importers with a reliable, fast-transit alternative to congestion at other west coast ports, the company said.
CMA CGM announced the route last month in response to increased e-commerce demand and the need for quicker transit times to US markets. The new service will increase import and export capacity in the NWSA gateway, adding additional container movements to and from inland hubs across the Midwest.
"The Northwest Seaport Alliance welcomes the opportunity to expand our relationship with our valued partner, CMA CGM, while alleviating congestion in southern California ports," said Port of Seattle Commission president Fred Felleman.
"We continue to make major investments in our maritime infrastructure to be able to capitalise on opportunities like the Golden Gate Bridge service that sustain our gateway, economy and living wage jobs," he said.
