ISRAELI flag carrier Zim and Hong Kong's non-operating shipowner Seaspan, now a wholly owned subsidiary of Hong Kong's Atlas Corp, have announced or the long-term charter of ten 15,000-TEU liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel container vessels to work Zim's US east coast trade.
Although nothing was revealed in the press release, these ships are likely bound to serve the US east coast from Asia via Suez because the biggest ships through Panama are 14,000 TEU.
Zim is a leading player in this growing trade with an estimated market share of nine per cent according to market intelligence provider, PIERS.
Said Zim president and CEO Eli Glickman: "This is a milestone agreement, valued in excess of US$1 billion that enables us to meet growing market demand on the Asia-US east coast trade and provide top-level, reliable service to our customers on this important trade lane."
Said Seaspan chairman, president and CEO Bing Chen: "This transaction signifies both Zim's and Seaspan's commitment to ESG [environmental, social and corporate governance] principles, carbon reduction, and resolve to contribute to a greener business community in the future."
Korean-based Samsung Heavy Industries, commissioned by Seaspan to build these vessels, is one of the world's largest shipyards and a leader in high-tech shipbuilding, with vast experience in LNG-fueled vessels.
