JNPT FY box volumes shrink 7pc despite record March
Date:2021-04-12 Readers:
CONTAINER volumes dropped by 7 per cent at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) to 4.7 million in the 2020-21 financial year despite a record March.

The total container traffic handled in March 2021 stood at 527,792 TEU, which is the highest container volume handled in a month since the inception of India's leading container port, reports New York's Container Management.

During the financial year, the average turnaround time for container vessels from by 2 per cent to 25.3 hours.

The port has five container terminals: APM Terminals Mumbai, which handled 1.66 million TEU; DP World facilities which handled 780,000 TEU and 750,000 TEU respectively, the port-owned JNPCT, which handled 540,000 TEU; and the newly developed Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (BMCT), which handled 930,000 TEU.

Shri Sanjay Sethi, IAS, chairman of JNPT said: "Despite the pandemic, JNPT along with its stakeholders stood up to this challenge, and put up a strong and spirited fight. JNPT will continue to play an important role and contribute to the nation's economy by delivering its duties of an important part of the supply chain."

The port authority, which has been working towards facilitating ease in doing business, has developed a new inter-terminal route connecting BMCT with the other four container terminals at the port.

A trial run of double stacked container trains from Mehsana in Gujarat state to JN Port has also proved successful.

During the financial year, the port launched India's first port-based Special Economic Zone, JNPT SEZ, while a coastal berth was constructed with the capacity to handle 2.5 million tonnes of coastal cargo including liquid cargo.
