Maersk eco expert tells US Congress to focus C02 efforts on land
Date:2021-04-27 Readers:
MAERSK, the world's biggest container shipping company, had its top environmental officer tell a US Congressional hearing to focus decarbonisation efforts on land and not at sea, reports the American Journal of Commerce.

"A major challenge in the transformation to low or zero emissions shipping is not at sea, but on land," said Maersk environmental chief Lee Kindberg.

She said Maersk had reduced fuel consumption by 46 per cent per container moved. It was achieved from larger vessels and improved operational and vessel management practices, she said.

"The technological changes on the vessels are minor compared with the massive innovative solutions and fuel transformation that must take place to produce and distribute entirely new energy sources" said Dr Kindberg."What we need now is to enable the technology leap to get to zero and here research and development will be fundamental," she said.
