Suez Canal to widen, deepen 30 kilometres of channel in 2 years
Date:2021-05-13 Readers:
PLANS have been unveiled by Suez Canal Authority chairman Osama Rabie to widen and deepen 30 kilometres of the waterway between Suez and the Great Bitter Lake, reported Adderbury, England's Bunkerspot.

The announcement by Admiral Rabie was also attended by the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who gave his approval for the start of work to be completed in 24 months.

The southern section of the canal will be widened and the draft will be increased to 72 feet. It was noted that the work will only be carried out by Suez Canal Authority dredgers.

As previously reported, the 20,000-TEU Ever Given, was eventually refloated on March 29. At that time, there was a backlog of over 400 vessels at the canal and the impact of the disruption to trade flows and vessel schedules is still being felt at global ports.
