Spain's Valenciaport sees a return to growth
Date:2021-07-22 Readers:
CONTAINER traffic at Valenciaport is up 3.34 per cent in the first half of 2021 compared to the same period in pre-pandemic 2019, reports WorldCargo News, Surrey, UK.

"The worst of the crisis is over and the pace of Valenciaport's shipping activity shows a very positive trend compared to 2019, a year without pandemic," declared the Valencia Port Authority.

Comparisons between H1 2021 and H1 2020 tend to be misleading as the global economy was dramatically slowed in H1 2020 by the pandemic. Valencia has helpfully provided a comparison between 2021 and 2019, which gives a clearer picture.

In June 2021, total freight traffic was 7.3 metric tonnes (mt), up 11.11 per cent compared to 2019 and 20.6 per cent on June 2020. "Increases above double digits are also seen in the movement of containers, which in June this year reached 487,803 TEU, representing an increase of 11.33 per cent compared to a "normal" year such as 2019 and 23.2 per cent compared to a pandemic month, which is June 2020," the port said.

"In this return to positive activity, exports by companies in the Valencian Community and Valenciaport's area of influence are playing a strategic role. Full containers dedicated to sales abroad stood at 96,455 TEU in June this year, 17 per cent more than in the same month of 2019 and 35 per cent more than in 2020. Both in this month and in the accumulated of the year, all productive sectors recorded positive figures, especially strategic industries such as construction materials, agri-food and automotive."

Looking at H1 2021 compared to H1 2019, total freight traffic rose 4 per cent to 42.6 mt. Container traffic increased 3.34 per cent to 2.83 million TEU, ro ro traffic fell 7 per cent to 6.3 mt, and auto units were down 30 per cent to 275,409.
