China limits climate ambition in face of power shortages
Date:2021-08-04 Readers:
CHINESE policymakers are urging an easing of climate measures as Beijing balances economic health the face of electric power shortages, reports Bloomberg News.

The strict enforcement of China's emission reduction is hampering the country's efforts to boost economic growth, said Xinhua.

Its report didn't elaborate on what measures need to be done on President Xi's target to reduce their emissions to zero by 2060.

Meanwhile, the Politburo's recommendation is coal, which is in short supply due to a trade spat with Australia, while a spate of fatal mining accidents has tightened safety inspections.

Coal prices in China have approached record levels while the country struggles to supply power to mitigate heat waves.

"Climate politics are still in flux. The carbon neutrality announcement mobilised the Chinese bureaucratic system to seek solutions. But this process is certainly not resistance-free," said Greenpeace East Asia analyst Li Shuo.
