CONTAINER throughput at Colombo port has hit pre-Covid crisis levels in the first half of 2021, recovering 9.1 per cent year on year to 3.57 million TEU compared to pre-Covid crisis 3.59 million TEU, reports Colombo's Daily Mirror.
The port handled 6.3 per cent more transshipment volumes year on year, standing at 2.86 million TEU while the domestic container volume was up 19.2 per cent to 617,353 TEU.
The container handling at China Merchants Port (CMPort) rose 9.2 per cent year on year, topping 1.5 million TEU.
The South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT) saw a 2.5 per cent increase in container throughput at 928,757 TEU.
Meanwhile, Jaya Container Terminals (JCT) declined 13.4 per cent to 863,538 TEU. East Container Terminal (ECT) handled 224,611 TEU in the six-month period of the year.
The Port of Colombo rebounded 41.2 per cent to 94,437 TEU in the period. Overall, ship traffic at Sri Lanka's ports recorded a decline of 1.8 per cent. However, cargo handling rose 13.8 per cent to 54.78 million tonnes in the six-month period.
CMPort-managed Hambantota Port handled 793,000 tonnes of cargo (excluding vehicle volumes), recording 338.1 per cent growth in the period.
"Third wave of Covid-19 had a limited impact on port activity and demand unlike with the onset of the pandemic in the first quarter of last year," said South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT).
