Proposed rule would allow brokers to share client information
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is proposing a rule change that would allow customs brokers to share client information with affiliated entities related to the broker so that these entities may offer non-customs business services to the broker's clients.
The rule change would also allow brokers to use outsiders for office services without violating rules protecting the confidentiality of clients' records.
With a client's written consent, brokers would be able to farm out such non-customs business services as photocopying, scanning and delivery of documents. The agency said it was proposing a change to its rules to keep them in line with current business practices.
Comments on the proposed rule change are due by Dec. 27. The proposed rule may be found in Wednesday's Federal Register.
