AZERBAIJAN'S Silk Way West Airlines has invested in two A350 freighters, marking a progression in the carrier's ambition to expand its international network to satisfy growing demand for air cargo to and from the region.
The Eurasian cargo carrier will take delivery of the A350Fs between 2027 and 2028, according to a statement, reports London's Air Cargo Eye.
An option for two more of the same type has been included in the agreement, which was signed at a June 28 ceremony in Baku attended by Wolfgang Meier, president of the airline, and Wouter Van Wersch, Airbus' executive vice-president of sales for the European region.
Founded in 2012 in Baku, Silk Way West Airlines - one of three companies of the Silk Way Group which provides air cargo transportation and aircraft maintenance services - operates up to 350 monthly flights worldwide utilising its current fleet of 12 B747-8F and B747-400F aircraft based at Heydar Aliyev International Airport.
With a network of more than 40 destinations across Europe, the CIS countries, the Middle East, central and eastern Asia and the Americas, the business' cargo turnover has grown to more than 500,000 tonnes annually, says the statement.
In April 2021, Silk Way West signed a fleet expansion agreement with Boeing for the purchase of five B777 freighters.
Mr Meier said the new Airbus freighter order marks a "defining moment" in the carrier's history as it strives for future growth.
It is Airbus' first order for the A350F in the central Asia and CIS region. Launched in 2021, the new freighter type has now attracted 31 orders and commitments from six customers, said the aircraft manufacturer.
