Port of Santos retains cargo handling record in October

BRAZIL's Port of Santos beat new cargo handling records in October, its best result for the month (14.4 million tons) and for the year (138.2 million tons, said a press release from the port authority.

The port authority also reported growth of 11.7 per cent compared to the period from January to October last year.

"The performance signals the prospect that the port will surpass the best annual mark in history - 147 million tons in 2021 - one month before the end of 2022." said the press release.

October surpassed the same month of last year by 34.5 per cent, mainly due to shipments, which advanced 48.1 per cent, totaling 10.5 million tons. Emphasis on agribusiness loads, such as the soy complex, which doubled the movement, with an increase of 106.8 per cent, to 1.5 million tons; sugar (39.3 per cent, to 2.3 million tons); and corn (130.6 per cent, to 2.5 million tons). Pulp also recorded a strong performance, with an advance of 69.4 per cent, to 863.7 thousand tons. Landings, on the other hand, grew 8.1 per cent in the month, reaching 3.9 million tons.

Container handling, which represents more than 30 per cent of the total in tonnage, also set new records. In October, 452,000 TEU, an increase of 9.5 per cent compared to October 2021 (413,000 TEU). In the accumulated result for the year, 4.2 million TEU, up 5.4 per cent compared to the same period last year (four million TEU).
