Damco, one of the leading logistics firms in India, plans to expand its trucking in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai and is contemplating an entry into the rail freight sector, reports London's International Freighting Weekly.
"We are looking at a few initiatives in the trucking segment. We would be able to offer competitive pricing based on our overall volumes. Hence, we are tying up with trucking companies in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai," said Damco south Asia CEO Lars Sorensen.
The stand alone logistics arm of the Maersk group intends to focus on long-term contracts with pre-set rates on confirmed volumes. "It would be more like long-term contracts of varied durations as long as we make sure that the prices are competitive," Mr Sorensen said.
Damco also plans to become a specialised freight forwarder in addition to its presence in air freight, sea freight and inland transportation.
"Within rail we are looking at what we call as rail overhauling. This would be like air freight and sea freight where there are middlemen involved. We are seeing how we can offer better services in this area," he said, adding that he plans to offer cargo tracking services on long-haul routes.
