CONTAINER volume in November decreased by 24.1 per cent compared to the year prior for the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA), the union of Seattle and Tacoma harbours.
The port had moved 247,034 TEU, with full imports and exports declining 31.1 per cent and 17.5 per cent, respectively, reports London's Port Technology.
Year-to-date volumes declined by 9.5 per cent to 3,152,217 TEU, with full imports and exports declining 14.2 per cent and 21.8 per cent, respectively.
Early arrival of holiday-related commodities caused import peak-season volumes to be less than usual, and void sailings by ocean carriers contributed to the year-on-year volume decline.
The strong currency, persistent tariffs in important markets, and reduced vessel capacity as a result of cancelled sailings continue to be challenges for exporters.
Domestic container volumes were down 0.1 per cent in November 2021 compared to 2021. Volumes in Alaska rose one per cent while those in Hawaii fell 4.8 per cent.

Eighty-one per cent of agricultural exports from the Mid-Willamette Valley are loaded onto vessels in the NWSA gateway.
