THE containership sector 2022 sales and purchase levels have been halved from 2021, according to Alphaliner's global survey, reports Banglalore's Marine Insight.
The purchases and sales for 2022 stand at 950,300 TEU, with boxship sales going down by 49 per cent compared to 2021. The capacity crunch was even greater, with a drop of 53 per cent from 2.04 million TEU in 2021. Globally, companies sold 295 box ships last year.
Leading was French shipping giant CMA CGM that acquired 102,500 TEU from 31 ship purchases. The liner accounted for 44 per cent of purchases from the 950,300 TEU up for sale in 2022.
MSC was the most active buyer and operator of 2022,though the report noted the absence of big tonnage providers from the market in 2022.
MSC bought the 8,800-TEU Northern Jasper and sold Northern Jupiter to Maersk at US$85 million and $133 million respectively.
Alphaliner underlined that the surge in vessel prices was due to the orderbook overcapacity, which is unlikely to ease soon. Non-operating owners and regional carriers are expected to benefit from the situation because of the prohibitive tonnage cost.
