PANAMA. ports' container volume fell 1.2 per cent to 8.5 million TEU in 2022, down from 8.6 million TEU the year before, reports UK's Seatrade Maritime News.
While volumes are down year on year, numbers for 2022 remained above the last pre-Covid crisis year still above 2019.
"It was a year of two different halves,"," said Manzanillo International Terminal (MIT) vice president Juan Carlos Croston.
"The first six months showed a positive trend reflecting the economies of the region and still carrying forward the good directions of 2021. But in the second half, high inflation, devaluation of several regional currencies, and rising interest rates took their toll on transshipment volumes." Mr Croston said.
Panama surpassed 7.3 million TEU in 2019, and volumes grew in 2020 to 7.7 million TEU during the Covid crisis, rebounding to 8.6 million TEU in 2021.
