AFTER two years of dramatic gains, Port Houston experienced its first decline in container import volumes, reports Fort Lauderdale's Maritime Executive.


The port had been able to maintain the TEU increases longer than other ports. Houston experienced its first overall volume decline in December 2022, led by a drop in imports.


Some 292,027 TEU were handled at Houston during December, a 12 per cent decline year on year.


Loaded container imports led the decrease, falling 16 per cent. However, the port still had its best December ever for exports, up seven per cent capping off an exceptionally strong year.


Houston recorded its best year in 2022, with a 14 per cent increase in container movements to 3,974,901 TEU.


"The volumes we've experienced this year at Port Houston have been incredible," said Port Houston executive director Roger Guenther.


"The record growth seen over the last couple of years has been supported by continued investments in Port Houston terminals as well as the immense dedication of the Port Houston staff and ILA labour. As we head into 2023, we will continue to stay in front of the curve to provide exceptional service."
