MARINE terminals at the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) of Seattle and Tacoma are looking to adjust gate closures to better accommodate Asia-bound agricultural cargo, reports New York's Journal of Commerce.
Lower import volumes have prompted US west coast marine terminals to cancel one or more work shifts a week, which results in delays and higher shipping costs.
"I have to hand it to the terminal operators, they're trying to come up with solutions," said Agriculture Transportation Coalition (AgTC) executive director Peter Friedmann.
The NWSA last month established a task force of agricultural exporters, terminal operators, and truckers to address the problem. Although they are getting closer to a solution, they're not there yet, said the port authority operations chief Tom Bellerud.
Containerised ag exports from the US to Asia in January slipped to 113,883 TEU, down 5.2 per cent year on year, according to PIERS data.
