Maersk to greet world's first methanol vessel in Copenhagen
Date:2023-05-11 Readers:
DANISH shipping giant AP Moller, Maersk is naming the world's first container vessel sailing on green methanol fuel.

This will take place from September 18 to 21 in Copenhagen, reports London's Port Technology.

The 172-metre-long vessel will leave the Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Korea this summer to embark on her maiden voyage to Copenhagen.

When docked in Copenhagen, the vessel will formally receive its name during a ceremony at Toldboden. The vessel will have a container capacity of 2,100 TEU and it will sail at a designed speed of 17.4 knots.

Maersk now prepares to receive a fleet of new, large ocean-going dual-fuel engine powered ships from 2024. The vessel comes to further Maersk's pursuit in operating on solely green fuels and on achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions in 2040 across the entire business.

To get there in time, the shipping company aims to transport a minimum 25 per cent of ocean cargo using green fuels by 2030 compared to a 2020 baseline.

This announcement comes a month after Maersk signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) on strategic cooperation for Shanghai port's methanol marine fuel project.

More recently, the Port of Melbourne, together with Maersk, ANL, Svitzer, Stolthaven Terminals, HAMR Energy and ABEL Energy, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the commercial feasibility of establishing a green methanol bunkering hub.
