THE Tin-Can Island Container Terminal Ltd (TICT) confirmed the arrival of the 6,750-TEU Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) Maureen, the largest containership to ever dock at Lagos, reports Ibadan's Nigerian Tribune.
Sailing under the flag of Panama, the MSC Maureen is an impressive vessel, boasting a draught of 12 metres, a length overall of 300 metres, and a beam of 40 metres.
MSC Nigeria Limited managing director Andrew Lynch highlighted the significant economic benefits that the successful berthing of this vessel will bring to Nigeria.
Not only will the large size of the ship contribute to economies of scale, but it will also enhance Nigeria's export efforts in international markets.
"This feat will help us reduce cost and create economies of scale for importers and exporters. Tin Can and Apapa ports remain very important for the Nigerian economy so if larger vessels come here, it will be a great benefit to everyone. We have seen that we can do it and this will make Lagos more competitive because the larger the vessel, the lower the freight rate becomes in terms of imports and exports," said Mr Lynch.
