DURING a meeting in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, the CEOs and leaders of 12 major global ports have decided to extend the World Port Climate Action Programme (WPCAP) with a renewed focus on shore power, new fuels, and green shipping corridors, reports Container News.
This decision marks the programme's first five years of operation.
The participating ports in the programme include Antwerp-Bruges, Barcelona, Gothenburg, Hamburg, HAROPA (Le Havre), Long Beach, Los Angeles, New York/New Jersey, Rotterdam, Valencia, Vancouver and Yokohama.
Over the years, WPCAP has played a crucial role in promoting the adoption of shore power at ports, which helps reduce CO2 emissions and pollutants when ships are at berth.
WPCAP members have developed comprehensive guidelines and a global overview of existing facilities to facilitate the technical, operational, and economic implementation of shore power. Ports in Northwest Europe have also committed to faster adoption through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
During the meeting, CEOs discussed the benefits of shore power, such as improved air quality and a better working environment for shipping crews.
They also emphasized the importance of involvement from terminals and shipping lines in advancing its adoption.
Furthermore, WPCAP will focus on facilitating the bunkering and adoption of cleaner fuels as its second priority in the coming years.
In collaboration with the IAPH Clean Marine Fuels working group, the ports have developed a Port Readiness Framework, a self-assessment and communication tool that enables stakeholders to understand the progress of research, development, and deployment of new fuels at ports worldwide.
The tool is expected to be available for voluntary use by ports by the end of the year.
Additionally, WPCAP recognizes the significant role that green corridors will play in the shipping industry's transition toward sustainability.
"Where the fuel readiness framework will set the standard for the bunkering of new fuels, green corridor initiatives are seen as key to facilitate the deployment of fuels in practice, particularly on longer international shipping routes," said WPCAP.
