THE Visakhapatnam Port Authority posted a record container handling throughput of 63,256 TEU, surpassing the previous record of 61,468 TEU set in May, reports the Times of India.
The port also handled the highest number of container vessels in a single month, with a total of 49, matching the record set in the previous month.
Since its establishment in 2003, the state-of-the-art container terminal on the east coast of India, the Vizag port benefits from its deep and natural draft, enabling it to accommodate large containerships.
Growth can be attributed to the mineral-rich hinterland of Visakhapatnam, says the port authority. Various commodities such as rice, maize, ferro, frozen sea food, chemicals and pharmaceuticals and metals have contributed to this growth.
Notably, the Vizag port holds the leading position in the country's marine products export segment alone, accounting for 26 per cent of the market share.
