Port of Oakland July container volume on the increase again
Date:2023-08-30 Readers:
THE Port of Oakland observed a notable surge in loaded container volume, marking the highest level reached since October 2022, reports the American Journal of Transportation.

During July 2023, laden containers experienced a robust growth of 16.8 per cent, with the port managing 136,181 TEU, a significant increase from the 116,629 TEU recorded in July 2022.

The import sector saw a 12.5 per cent rise, with 78,122 TEU passing through Oakland's marine terminals, in contrast to the 69,463 TEU recorded in July 2022.

Concurrently, full exports exhibited an impressive leap of 23.1 per cent, involving 58,059 TEU making their way through the port, compared to the 47,166 TEU noted in July 2022.

It's worth noting that, while the export figures displayed substantial growth compared to the same period in the previous year, the container volumes for July 2022 were unusually low.

Despite the export surge, the volume recorded in July 2023 is still lower than the year-to-date monthly average for 2023.

The number of vessel calls has continued to rise, accompanied by reduced time each ship spends at berth.

This suggests a smoother flow of cargo and indicates that the congestion challenges of the pandemic era are gradually becoming a thing of the past.

This positive trend is expected to enable the port to capture a significant portion of the heightened demand increase.

"We are encouraged to see container volumes gradually rebounding," said Port of Oakland maritime director Bryan Brandes.

"The port is making great investments at the Oakland Seaport to foster growth which ultimately benefits the local economy and helps power local jobs," he said.
