HD KSOE constructs world's first ship featuring AI engineer
Date:2023-09-07 Readers:
SOUTH Korean shipbuilder HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, also known as HD KSOE, has reportedly achieved a groundbreaking feat by constructing and delivering the world's first vessel equipped with a pioneering artificial intelligence (AI) engineer, reports Bangalore's MarineInsight.

The vessel in question, a 180,000-ton bulk carrier optimised for liquefied natural gas (LNG), was built by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries.

This AI engineer encompasses two AI-powered engine automation systems, the Integrated Condition Diagnosis Solution (HiCBM), functions as a real-time management and diagnostic system for critical ship components like engines, pumps and compressors.

By harnessing AI capabilities, HiCBM identifies potential signs of failure, ensures operational stability and averts malfunctions during navigation.

The second solution, the Integrated Safety Control Solution (HiCAMS), is an AI-powered safety overseer. It detects and assesses safety-related incidents using onboard closed-circuit television systems.

These AI-driven systems can be adapted to existing vessels. The reliability, safety, and efficacy of these systems were verified through trial operations conducted under the supervision of the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), the company said.

This led to the systems receiving Approval in Principle (AIP) from ABS in September 2022.
