IN the first half of 2023, the Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) successfully managed 23.74 million TEU, indicating a substantial year-on-year growth of 5.3 per cent, reports UK's Seatrade Maritime News.
This impressive volume figure firmly solidifies Shanghai's position as the world's largest container port.
Within the confines of the Shanghai port area, specifically at Yangshan, container throughput reached an impressive 11.9 million TEU, constituting a substantial 50.1 per cent of the port's overall container volume.
Furthermore, SIPG reported a cargo throughput of 276 million tonnes during the first half of the year, demonstrating an increase of 13.6 per cent when compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.
"There was growth pressure from port throughput in the first half due to the slowdown of China's import and export. Global international hub ports' competition will be intensified in the coming days, and we need to strengthen multi-modal transportation between hinterland and ports and jointly promote high-quality development of the integration of regional ports, as well as the digitalization, automation, and technology innovation," said SIPG.
