AS the Philippine Navy's guided-missile frigate BRP Antonio Luna (FF 151) sailed through the West Philippine Sea (WPS), it welcomed another nation on board during a bilateral voyage with the Royal Canadian Navy's Halifax-class frigate HMCS Ottawa (FFH 341), reports Manila's Philippines Inquirer.
The two vessels met near the Malampaya natural gas platform, establishing radio communications and conducted maneuvers for the watch officers.
This joint sailing event, which took place from 7:23 am to 10 am, was confirmed in a statement released by the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
Situated 50 kilometres northwest of the mainland of Palawan province, the Malampaya platform serves as the country's sole domestic commercial source of natural gas, contributing to 20 per cent of the nation's total power supply.
It is positioned adjacent to the resource-rich Recto (Reed) Bank, known for its oil reserves.
"The joint sail is part of the Philippine Navy's regular engagements with its partners in the Philippines' maritime zones. Bravo Zulu to all the personnel of both ships and those who planned this activity," said AFP public affairs office chief Lt Col Enrico Gil Ileto.
