Italian container line falls victim of Israel's war with Hamas
Date:2023-11-20 Readers:
ISRAEL's ongoing war with Hamas has crippled one Italian container line, reports Singapore's Splash 247.

Alphaliner is reporting that a charter conflict has broken out between Kalypso di Navigazione and Zhonggu Shipping with the Chinese tonnage provider refusing to allow its four 2,518 TEU ships to call in Israel.

The vessels had been deployed on Kalypso's Marco Polo service connecting Asia with the Mediterranean. They have been at anchor in the Red Sea and the Pearl River Delta for a month now as Zhonggu Shipping barred Kalypso from calling in Israel, which previously served as the first import call on the loop, which is Kalypso's last remaining service.

Kalypso is the liner shipping subsidiary of the Italian forwarding company RifLine, which entered the Asia-Europe trade during the covid pandemic.

"The dispute between Kalypso and Zhonggu remains unresolved, and it will likely go into arbitration, which could lead to a premature termination of the charters," Alphaliner reported in its latest weekly report with Kalypso reported to be looking for an alternative charter market vessel to perform an upcoming sailing from China to the Med.
