COCHIN Shipyard Ltd (CSL), India's premier shipbuilding and repair yard, has placed an order for 2 ¡Á 2 ¡Á MAN 12V175D-MEV variable-speed GenSets, reports Athens' Safety4Sea.
This move is part of the shipyard's collaboration with global logistics company Samskip Group, based in Rotterdam, for the construction of two innovative short-sea feeder containerships under the SeaShuttle project.
These vessels, set to be pioneers in their category globally, will be powered by individual 3.2 MW hydrogen fuel-cell-based energy systems.
The MAN GenSets will serve as a backup, constituting a diesel-electric propulsion plant with a permanent magnet generator.
Samskip CEO Are Grathen expressed pride in leading the SeaShuttle initiative, aligning with their commitment to "making green logistics easy".
The project aims to realise emissions-free container shipping, contributing to Europe's first zero-emission "green corridors"' as emphasised in the COP26 Clydebank Declaration.
Scheduled for delivery in Q3 and Q4 of 2025, this 135-metre, 500-TEU ship will operate between Oslo Fjord and Rotterdam, covering a distance of 700 nautical miles.
Notably, they are designed to be remotely controlled and are equipped for future autonomy.
"This is a groundbreaking project which sets new standards for environmentally friendly shipping. In that vein, our engines are capable of running on bio-fuels like HVO and B100 and showcase our green credentials in pursuing decarbonisation," said MAN Energy Solutions high-speed head Florian Keiler.
"We congratulate Samskip and CSL on this exciting venture and look forward to working closely with them."
