Mundra Port breaches 5 million TEU in 9 months

ADANI Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has achieved a record-breaking 5.5 million TEU in nine months and is poised to exceed 7 million TEU in container cargo volumes by the end of FY24, reports London's Port Technology.

The JV terminal at Mundra Port, AICTPL, set a national record by handling 300,431 TEU in November 2023, breaking its own record of 298,634 TEU in March 2021.

In October 2023, the port handled 16 million tonnes of cargo and established a new milestone of achieving the highest cargo volumes by any Indian port in a single month.

Other ports, both on the east and west coast, recorded key milestones during the April to December period. The second largest port in the APSEZ portfolio, Krishnapatnam, berthed its largest-ever vessel, with a length of 335.94 metres and beam 42.94 metres. A similar feat was recorded by the Gangavaram port, which berthed its deepest draft vessel of 18.12 metres in December.

The Dhamra port handled the highest quantity of dry cargo (185,856 MT), surpassing the previous record of 173,524 tonnes. The port also berthed its first LNG-powered cape-sized vessel, the Ubuntu Unity.

The Ennore terminal achieved a strong monthly throughput, crossing an impressive 65,000 TEU in November 2023 surpassing its earlier peak volume of 59,985 TEU. It also handled its largest ever shipment of 7,238 TEU.

The Kattupalli port berthed the Seaspan Beacon with 10,000 TEU, surpassing its previous record of handling 8,600 TEU in a ship.

Logistics volumes continue to witness record growth, with year-to-date rail volumes at a record high of around 4,37,000 TEU (an increase of 22 per cent and bulk cargo (General Purpose Wagon Investment Scheme) volumes of 14.2 million tonnes, up 47 per cent year on year.

In April 2023, APSEZ completed the acquisition of Karaikal Port Private Limited (KPPL) pursuant to National Company Law Tribunal¡¯s (NCLT) approval.

More recently, APSEZ entered into a second strategic partnership for the operation of Adani Ennore Container Terminal Pvt Ltd (AECTPL) with Terminal Investment Limited (TiL), MSC's container terminal operating and investing arm.
