THE commander of the naval forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has characterized the attacks on shipping by the Iran-backed Houthi group as a display of valour, reports Tehran's Iran International.
"Maritime Operations of Yemen in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait are aimed at supporting Muslims by hindering the passage of ships associated with Israel or those heading towards Israel," said commander Alireza Tangsiri.
Mr Tangsiri's statements are consistent with the position of other Iranian officials who assert that Yemen is an independent country with a formidable military and an autonomous leader who operates without taking orders from any external entity.
This claim is made despite that Iran's Supreme Leader had advocated for the blockade following the Gaza war.
After Iran-backed Hamas's attack on Israel, the subsequent retaliatory strikes by Israel prompted Iran's proxies in the region to not only target Israel but also direct attacks toward the US due to its alliance with Israel.
The Red Sea blockade has resulted in the US and the UK targeting key sites in Yemen to address the crisis impacting global shipping routes, considering that the Red Sea represents 12 per cent of global shipping.
Iran foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has recently refuted accusations of supporting Houthi rebels in Yemen, who stand accused of disrupting global trade through attacks on commercial vessels.
In an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Mr Amir-Abdollahian asserted that individuals from Yemen and other regional countries supporting Palestinians act independently.
