THERE'S a new choice for intermodal shippers seeking to move goods between Mexico and the US - the use of domestic containers facilitated by brokers, reports New York's Journal of Commerce.
Run Rail, a wholesaler boasting 650 containers, has teamed up with non-asset intermodal marketing companies (IMCs) to provide service in Mexico, partnering with Ferromex and BNSF Railway for operations.
Run Rail CEO Chris Joslyn stated the company provides service from the Mexican city of Monterrey and Silao to Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and Oakland-Stockton.
The first shipment was sent last week. "The container itself has become commoditised, so the differentiation comes from accessibility, cost per route and the route and service design itself," said Mr Joslyn.
"Shippers working with non-asset IMCs are looking to have options that can show consistent performance and competitive rate structures. We, and other independent equipment providers, certainly offer these things."
Run Rail is just one of the options available to shippers who prefer collaborating with non-asset IMCs. COFC Logistics offers a Ferromex-BNSF service to beneficial cargo owners (BCOs) between Mexico and Chicago or Los Angeles through contractual arrangements, although CEO Garry Old notes that their service is "very limited," as reported by the Journal of Commerce.
Additionally, Matson offers several options in Mexico, boasting several hundred containers in their fleet.
Providers like Run Rail, COFC, and Matson offer access to BNSF for shippers who may encounter challenges in striking agreements with JB Hunt Transport Services.
