Danaos returns to Yangzijiang for 2 methanol-ready ships
Date:2024-02-22 Readers:

DANAOS Corporation, a Greek shipowner, has initiated a contract worth US$188.4 million to build two methanol-capable containerships, each with a capacity of 8,258 TEU, at Yangzijiang shipyard in China, reports Rotterdam's Offshore Energy.

With this latest addition, Danaos now has 12 ships on order, totaling 91,430 TEU in capacity, as part of its fleet renewal strategy.

The delivery of these vessels are anticipated between 2024 and 2027, with the two most recent orders set to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027.

"Danaos has also recently ordered two more 8,258-TEU vessels at Yangzijiang shipyard, and we now have a total of four vessels under construction at that shipyard with deliveries scheduled for the second half of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027," said Danaos CEO John Coustas.

"All 12 vessels in our newbuilding programme are methanol ready and are designed with the latest eco characteristics. Demand for shipyard delivery slots is very high as the industry is quickly moving to reduce carbon emissions by operating green vessels."
