A "pioneering" ammonia fuel supply system has been launched to be used on the world's first ammonia-fueled oceangoing vessel
Date:2024-03-06 Readers:
Wartsila Gas Solutions, part of the Finnish technology group Wartsila, has launched a "pioneering" ammonia fuel supply system (AFSS) for ships fuelled by ammonia.

Because ammonia significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions during combustion, produces virtually no sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions, and significantly reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) emissions, ammonia is widely viewed by the shipping industry as one of the most promising new Marine fuels.

Wartsila says its AFSS is an innovative and reliable system for both liquid and gaseous fuels, capable of using ammonia as a Marine fuel. This type of system is suitable for both new construction and conversion of existing vessels, and can be used as an integrated cargo handling and fuel supply system on liquefied gas carriers, especially those carrying ammonia as cargo, such as very large liquefied petroleum gas/liquid ammonia carriers (VLGC/VLAC) and medium gas carriers.

At the same time, this type of system can also be used as a standalone fuel supply system in IGF-compliant vessels equipped with low pressure/high pressure systems or a combination of both.

The system consists of a pump and heat exchanger to provide a steady and reliable fuel flow to the engine under moderate pressure and temperature conditions. The AFSS is equipped with components such as a proven purge gas treatment system. Due to the high requirements for fuel cleanliness, the appropriate filtration device is also installed in the upstream location of the system and is embedded in the system.

Wartsila's first AFSS will be installed on two 46,000 cubic metre LPG/ ammonia carriers being built by South Korea's Hyundai Mipo Shipbuilding for Belgian shipowner Exmar LPG, which will be the world's first ocean-going vessels equipped with ammonia dual-fuel engines, with engines provided by WinGD.

According to earlier news, Wartsila was to supply four sets of cargo handling and fuel supply systems for the four 46,000 cubic metre LPG carriers ordered by Exmar at Hyundai Mipo. All four of the new vessels were originally built using LPG fuel, but Exmar announced the replacement of two of them with ammonia fuel in October last year and changed the order to Wartsila.
